Guidance on medical cannabis

In MRHA News and Safety Alerts, Simplifying Product Supply

The Royal College of GPs has produced guidance on the use of cannabis, which includes some conditions for which there is evidence of efficacy, and information about the currently available licensed medicines. GPs can prescribe licensed preparations of cannabis which currently only include Sativex and Nabilone.

The MHRA has produced guidance on the use of unlicensed cannabis products and these can only be prescribed by consultants who are on the GMC Specialist Register. In addition, the requirements for procurement, supply and record keeping for unlicensed medicinal cannabis are onerous so the availability of it for routine patient use will be limited for the foreseeable future.

Information for patients is available on the NHS website.
