NG145 Thyroid disease: assessment and management

This NICE guideline was published in November 2019 and covers investigating suspected thyroid disease and managing primary thyroid disease. It does not cover managing thyroid cancer or thyroid disease in pregnancy. It aims to improve quality of life by making the below recommendations on diagnosis, treatment, long-term care and support:

  • Information for people with thyroid disease, their families and carers
  • Investigating suspected thyroid dysfunction or thyroid enlargement
  • Managing primary hypothyroidism
  • Follow-up and monitoring of primary hypothyroidism
  • Managing and monitoring of subclinical hypothyroidism
  • Managing thyrotoxicosis
  • Follow-up and monitoring of hyperthyroidism
  • Managing and monitoring of subclinical hyperthyroidism
  • Diagnosing, managing and monitoring of thyroid enlargement with normal thyroid function
