NICE CG150 Headaches
A clinical guideline has been produced by NICE on the diagnosis and management of headaches for adults and children over 12 years.
Headaches are one of the most common neurological problems and are the cause widespread pain and disability.
Many clinicians have difficulty in assessing and diagnosing the cause of headaches which have been classified into 3 primary types- tension headache, migraine and cluster headache. The diagnostic features have been tabulated for comparison and further criteria are provided for confirmation.
The overuse of some medications is a main secondary cause of headaches and paradoxically these drugs include analgesics such as paracetamol, NSAIDs and opioids.
Treatment options for prophylactic, acute and chronic use are provided.
