New safety needles and syringes – be compliant with new

In Improving Compliance, Pharmacy Information, Regulations and Standards

Regulations implementing European Council Directive 2010/32/EU (the “Sharps Directive”) as EU law came into force across the UK on 11th May 2013.

Our new range of safety needles and syringes will help you achieve compliance with this new legal requirement.

Sharps injuries occur when a needle or other sharp instrument used in a medical procedure cuts another person. The sharp may pass on an infection,  such as hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

In addition to existing health and safety law, the new regulations provide specific details on requirements that must be taken by healthcare employers and their employees.

In particular, employers must now substitute traditional, unprotected medical sharps with a ‘safer sharp’ (incorporating protection mechanisms) where it is reasonably practicable to do so.

The Royal College of Nursing has produced comprehensive guidance on the implementation of EU Directive 2010/32/EU:
