NICE Guidance on Psychosis and Schizophrenia in adults (CG178)

Over a lifetime, about 1% of the population will develop psychosis and schizophrenia. The updated guidance proposes new key priorities and many new recommendations in prevention, treatment, recovery and future care.

One important issue which needs to be addressed is regarding treatment with antipsychotic medication. NICE recommends (section that the secondary care team are responsible for monitoring patients’ physical health for at least 12 months, or until the condition has stabilised.

Therefore, a patient who is discharged into Primary Care may be referred back to the original hospital for monitoring, unless this has been addressed in the commissioning and contracting stage prior to admission.
