Worried about hospital safety? You’re not alone
We live and work in an era of ever-tightening regulation and compliance. And as society becomes increasingly litigious, there is a very tangible fear of divulging anything that may be used in evidence against you.
This is, of course, multiplied when it comes to hospitals, where the stakes are so much higher, and the consequences of a mistake unthinkable. If you are Director or Senior Manager of a hospital, then it becomes even more difficult to admit your concerns.
So it may come as something of a relief that you are not alone.
In late November we carried out some research amongst 200 individuals working in private hospitals around the country. The questions focused on their confidence levels around issues including patient safety, clinical governance and compliance. Their individual feedback is, of course, confidential. But the collective results are eye-opening.
- Only 29% claim to be “completely confident” about levels of patient safety in their hospitals.
- 21% are “concerned” or “very concerned” about the standard of training
- 26% are “concerned” or “very concerned” about achieving and maintaining compliance
- 15% are “concerned” or “very concerned” about the standard of patient care
The list goes on. And on. Which, as pharmacists working in this industry, doesn’t surprise us.
We are lucky enough to visit hospitals on a very regular basis. We have frank conversations with individuals at every level, including directors, ward managers and nurses. They explain how quickly the compliance tent moves on. How much training is required to keep pace. How easy it is for paperwork to get in the way of client care.
This blog piece isn’t meant to scare you. Quite the opposite. It is simply to reassure. We conducted the research to help ensure that we focus on delivering products and services that hospitals need the most. And although we were surprised by the extent of the concerns expressed in the answers, we are perfectly placed to help.
As you’ll see elsewhere on the site, we have entire teams focused on delivering better training to your staff. We can help bring your compliance up to scratch – and can even run a mock inspection. We can help advise on crucial aspects of patient safety, on how best to involve patients in decisions about their care, and how to improve standards of clinical governance.
The key is not to panic. If you are worried, you are not alone. We can lend a discreet ear and quickly help you resolve issues that are causing sleepless nights.
Do give us a call any time on 0845 222 3550 to discuss any aspect of this in more detail. We’ll publish further results of the survey in the New Year. Do let us know if you’d like us to send them to you directly.
