Department of Health – widening the availability of the naloxone injection
Naloxone is the emergency antidote for overdoses caused by heroin and other opioids, such as methadone and morphine.
Naloxone cannot be sold over the counter and is only available on prescription.
However, regulations were introduced on 1 October 2015, which have widened the availability of naloxone. This means that drug treatment services can supply naloxone injections without a prescription for the purposes of emergency treatment of opioid overdoses.
