Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management (NG80)

This NICE guideline was published in November 2017 and covers diagnosing, monitoring and managing asthma in adults, young people, and children. Its core aim is to make diagnosing asthma more accurate, to improve symptom control and reduce the risk of asthma attacks. This NICE guidance makes recommendations on the following:

  • Initial clinical assessment
  • Diagnosing asthma in young children
  • Objective tests for diagnosing asthma in people aged five and over
  • Diagnostic summary
  • Principles of pharmacological treatment
  • Pharmacological treatment pathway for adults, children aged five to six and children under five
  • Adherence
  • Self-management
  • Increasing ICS treatment within a self-management programme
  • Decreasing maintenance therapy
  • Risk stratification
  • Monitoring asthma control.
