World Glaucoma Week & Glaucoma Treatment
What does World Glaucoma Week aim to do?
World Glaucoma Week aims to get people talking about eye health and try to eliminate un-needed blindness caused by glaucoma. It is very important to get eye checks at regular intervals, because if the condition is caught early it is very treatable, with minimal damage done to your eyes. However, if you leave it unchecked you could gradually lose your eyesight.
If Glaucoma is left untreated, it can cause you to go blind!
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a serious condition that affects the eye. The condition damages the optic nerve which transfers information from the eye to the brain. This will result in gradual loss of vision and, if it’s not treated early, it can lead to total loss of vision.
The damage to the optic nerve usually happens when eye fluid cannot drain away properly, leading to pressure increasing inside the eye. This condition is common but people often don’t realise they have it, as it can be symptomless in the early stages.
It is important to have regular eye tests as this can be one of the only ways to pick up the condition in the early stages. However, the NHS website states that the symptoms you should also be looking out for that could indicate glaucoma includes:
- intense eye pain
- a red eye
- a headache
- tenderness around the eyes
- seeing rings around lights
- blurred vision
For more information this condition, please visit the NHS website.
