Monitored dosage systems (MDS) in care homes

In Medicines Management Processes, Pharmacy Information

The main pharmacy providers to care homes have announced that they will cease to provide monitored dosage systems (MDS), also known as compliance aids or blister packs, to care homes. This is because the use of traditionally dispensed medication and original packs for named patients is understood to be a safer and better option for administering medication in care homes.

Guidance on the changeover from using monitored dosage systems has been produced by PrescQIPP, which recommends careful planning to ensure a safe transition.

Ashtons will continue to provide our hospitals with blister packs which are mostly used for patient self-administration or for leave medication. Please note there is an extra charge for this service.
