Controlled Drugs – New Regulation for Disposal

In Improving Compliance, Pharmacy Information, Regulations and Standards

Hospitals must register with the Environment Agency in order to denature unwanted controlled drugs (CDs) prior to disposal.

Registration is currently free and can be done using an Exemption Form which can be obtained online. The exemption code is T28.

Denaturing is the process whereby the CDs are rendered irretrievable before being placed in an approved pharmaceutical waste bin. This is usually done by using a proprietary CD denaturing kit such as Denkit.
