CQC report on the state of mental health

The CQC has recently produced a report looking into the state of mental health services and the quality of care provided, between 2014 and 2017. The report looks at the evidence from the CQC’s inspections and looks at a variety of factors in the mental health sector, including the use of the Mental Health Act. As of 31 May 2017, they had rated 54 NHS trusts and 218 independent NHS services.

What were the findings of the Report on the state of mental health?

The report found that a larger proportion of independent mental health services were rated as good compared to NHS Trusts (72% and 68% respectively). However, 6% of NHS trusts were rated as outstanding, compared to only 4% of independent mental health services.

Furthermore, if you split it down to types of services, there are those who perform better than others. The report found that community services for people with learning disabilities and for older people performed particularly well. The report also found that services (which required improvement) had taken on board the CQC’s findings, and had ‘committed to tackle problems proactively and learn from others’.

The report also showed that 39% of NHS trusts needed improvement, with only one rated as inadequate. Comparably, only 23% of independent mental health services needed improvement, with 3 rated as inadequate.

The CQC report identified the following areas of concern:

  • Concerns about ‘locked rehabilitation wards’
  • Great variation between wards in how frequently staff use restrictive practices and physical restraint to de-escalate challenging behaviour
  • The impact of staffing shortages
  • Poor quality clinical information systems
  • Commissioning of crisis care services
