Diabetes Test Strips
The prevalence of diabetes in mental health is much higher than that of the general population. 20% of people who suffer from schizophrenia are said to have diabetes, whereas only around 5.5% of the general population have the disease.
Therefore, it is recommended that hospital inpatients are tested for diabetes on admission, and routinely for long-stay patients. This is because there are many drugs that could make someone put on weight and increase their risk of getting diabetes and routinely testing will ensure that it is caught early and long-term damage can be minimised.
Diabetes test strips play a very important role in helping diabetes sufferers to monitor and control their diabetes. The strips have a chemical called glucose oxidase on them, and this reacts with blood-producing gluconic acid from glucose in the blood.
At the other end of the strip, a current is produced by the meter and sent down the strip and is measured by electronic terminals found all the way along the strip. The amount of gluconic acid present affects the current and the Blood Glucose Meter then uses an algorithm to work out the blood glucose level based on the difference in current.
