Irritable Bowel Syndrome (CG61)

 In NICE guidelines

Covers the care pathway from diagnosis and recommendations for referral to secondary care, through to lifestyle advice, drug or psychological interventions and follow-up.

IBS is a chronic, relapsing and often life long disorder. It is characterised by the presence of abdominal pain or discomfort, which may be associated with defaecation and/or a change in bowel habit.

CG61 aims to provide:

  • positive diagnostic criteria for people presenting with symptoms suggestive of IBS
  • guidance on clinical and cost effective management of IBS in primary care
  • clinical indications for referral to IBS services, taking into account cost effectiveness.
