Lorazepam injection shortage
The supply problems of lorazepam injection have become significantly worse.
It has not been possible to obtain supplies in the UK, and supplies from abroad have recently not been forthcoming either. Unless wards have sufficient stocks, prescribers should consider alternative options to lorazepam injection.
(Note- there are no problems obtaining lorazepam tablets)
The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines recommend midazolam buccal solution (Buccolam®). This is administered from a pre-filled oral syringe and is rapidly absorbed from the mouth so an injection is not necessary. Midazolam is also available for IM injection, but not in tablet form.
