NICE Clinical Guideline – Opioids in palliative care (CG 140)

 In Clinical Guidelines, NICE guidelines

This clinical guideline provides advice on the safe and effective prescribing of strong opioids for pain in palliative care of adults.

Each year 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK and it is estimated that there are 900,000 people living with heart failure. Others live with chronic illness such as kidney, liver and respiratory disease, and with neurodegenerative conditions. Many people with these conditions will develop pain for which a strong opioid may be needed. Evidence suggests that pain is under-treated.
