NICE Guidance (NG5): Medicines Optimisation

 In Clinical Guidelines, NICE guidelines

This guideline offers best practice advice on the care of all people who are using medicines.

Medicines prevent, treat or manage conditions, however it has been estimated that between 30% and 50% of medicines prescribed for long term conditions are not taken as intended. Getting the most from medicines for both patients and hospitals is becoming increasingly important as more people are taking more medicines.

Encouraging patient involvement with making medicine choices is an important way of improving treatment compliance, so clinical staff should take into account patients’ needs, wishes and preferences when determining treatment.
