Welcome to the October issue of Ashtons Pharmacy News

Our feature article is about Combined Hormonal Contraceptives and focuses on the need to take them in the correct order, at the right time and without delay. Adverse drug interactions can occur and steps must be taken to avoid these.

Prescribing is a vitally important process, so best practice guidelines have been developed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which include a Competency Framework. Also, we have provided the regulatory requirements for writing Controlled Drugs prescriptions, as it can be so frustrating when the pharmacist is legally unable to dispense it due to an error or missing detail.

Also included is guidance on treating various conditions for patients with learning disabilities, such as weight management, constipation, and mental health problems.

It was a privilege for all our staff to receive a visit from the well-respected mental health pharmacist Professor Stephen Bazire, who has made such a significant difference to the treatment of so many patients. He is responsible for developing MaPPs and Choice and Medication which are available via Ashtons Live View, as well as the Psychotropic Drug Directory which is an invaluable reference book.
