 In Clinical Guidelines, NHS Guidelines

NHS guidance has been produced for the recommended monitoring of patients who are prescribed certain medication to minimise clinical risk and improve patient safety. This information has been produced for primary care, but it can be used in any setting.

The guidance includes recommendations on psychotropic drugs and drugs for physical health such as:

Psychotropic drugs

  • Antipsychotics
  • Lithium
  • Valproate.

Physical drugs

  • ACE inhibitors, digoxin, amiodarone and other cardiac drugs
  • NSAIDs
  • Thyroxine
  • Warfarin.

The recommended guidance is supported by relevant evidence-based references such as the BNF, NICE and the manufacturer’s summary product characteristics (SPCs). Clinicians can use this guidance to develop appropriate care plans for monitoring patients who are prescribed these drugs.
