Record Management Code of Practice 2016
The Information Governance Alliance (IGA) published guidance on the code of practice for records management for health and social care in July 2016, and this has replaced previous guidance. The updated Record Management Code of Practice for Health and Social Care 2016 forms part of a series of information governance guidance including the Department of Health Confidentiality, NHS Code of Practice and the Information Security Management.
The Code gives guidance on the regulatory framework, how to manage records and how to deal with specific types of records.
The Code applies to NHS records (including NHS patients treated in private hospitals) and public health records. This includes staff records, complaints, and corporate records. A record is defined by the ISO 15489-1:2016 standard as ‘information created, received, and maintained as evidence and information by an organisation or person, in pursuance of legal obligations or in the transaction of business.
